Big Toe in the Water

Tri-State HRMA

Ever walk into a meeting and you’re grateful that no one can see what you’re thinking? You don’t hear any laughter. Everyone is looking down at their phone. No one is introducing themselves to anyone else. Harriet asked herself why is it the opposite (!) every time she attends a Tri-State HRMA meeting?

Harriet had the honor of presenting to this chapter meeting on April 4, 2019, and it’s so obvious why. It’s the Leadership! Why not try this for your next meeting? If you’re leading the meeting, like their President John Baldino, MSHRD SPHR SHRM-SCP did, be at the reception desk greeting everyone with a smile. Welcome them to your meeting. Have an agenda that is “tight.” Everyone knows what topics will be addressed and by whom, and how long their presentation will last. Welcome guests, highlight why upcoming events will be fun and worthwhile to you (WIIFM). If you want people engaged, be engaging yourself. Listen to their feedback.

Harriet Stein has more than thirty years’ experience in the healthcare industry, including almost a decade teaching Mindfulness at Johnson & Johnson. She is a Registered Nurse and professional presenter to companies ranging in size from small firms through the Fortune 500.
